Welcome to Battlefield Select Tours

WW1-March-11-055ABattlefield Select Tours are a family and friends based company. We take great pride in bringing our clients on inspirational journeys of remembrance and discovery that will take in the great battlefields, memorials and war cemeteries throughout France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.

Battlefield Select Tours came about when we realised that we could provide a VIP service at a reasonable price to clients in Scotland and the North of England. We believed we could organise a similar tour if not better where we aim to take out any of the inconvenience from having to make your way to the South to meet other Battlefield Tours who normally start operating from there and taking out any additional travel and accommodation costs. We also realised for the average cost of attending a Battlefield Tour we could travel direct in luxury, be able to stay in Boutique hotels and enjoy the usual luxuries of being on holiday as well as having all our meals provided which also help cut out any language barrier which may occur whilst traveling in Europe.

In May 2015 over 40 former Scots Guards officers and their wives visited the battlefield of Waterloo where, two hundred years previously, the Scots Guards had fought with distinction. The present day visit started at Quatre Bras, scene of a fierce encounter between British and French troops on the day before the main engagement two hundred years ago, before moving to the site of the Battle of Waterloo where the Scots Guards had played a major role at one of the Duke of Wellington’s battlefield strongholds: Château d'Hougoumont.

On their way back to UK the party visited the battlefield of Festubert, where exactly one hundred years after Waterloo, in the Great War, the Scots Guards had sustained heavy casualties whilst taking some vital ground around that tiny village. Other places of regimental interest were visited as the party made its way back towards the channel.

There was a complicated three-day itinerary with two nights in hotels and tight daytime schedules with no margin for map reading errors or other slippage. Under the superb leadership of John Marr, Battlefield Select Tours, the entire event rolled out without a hitch. The party met in Wellington Barracks on the first day before embarking in a luxury coach for a night in Brussels, followed by a second night in Lille, before returning to Wellington Barracks precisely on time in the early evening of the third day. John Marr’s planning arrangements and their execution were without fault throughout. He and his team were professional, helpful, thoughtful and utterly reliable. Put simply, the Scots Guards tour to Waterloo for the 200th anniversary of that great battle would not have happened without John Marr and the staff of Battlefield Select Tours.

Just returned from a WW1 Battlefields Tour with Battlefield Tours Select which is run by John Marr and his wife . From the first experience we had on joining the bus in Inverness, we knew this was going to be an enjoyable, friendly and well organised tour. All our personal needs were well taken care of by John and Peter throughout the week and the professional service provided by our English speaking tour Guide was invaluable. The travel arrangements by luxury coach, and North Sea ferry as well as the excellent hotel accommodation in Ypres could not be faulted. Would definitely recommend Battlefield Select Tours. As the only operator catering for the needs of visitors from the Highlands and Islands, the door to door service provided a stress-free opportunity to fulfil a long awaited trip to pay our respects to family members. Tremendous value for money and already looking forward to our next trip with the company.

Dear John,
On behalf of the all from the Queen’s Own Highlanders Regimental Association and the Royal British Legion Nairn Branch who attended the recent tour to Ypres, Arras and the Somme a huge thank you. I cannot speak for the individuals who joined us but I am sure they will support me fully.  From start to finish you looked after us extremely well and all the arrangements went without a hitch.  The standard of service on the coach made sure that all our needs were more than catered for.  The ferry, hotel and eating arrangements were all as we hoped for and I didn’t hear a single complaint.
Ian McHenry our guide on the battlefields was well chosen and he did much to paint the picture and add the details required to give us a full picture of what actually went on.  His knowledge and his way of putting it across suited us perfectly.  Allowing individuals the opportunity to visit the graves of relatives also went down well.
Before we arrived back in Nairn our members were already discussing the next one.  If there is a next one we will certainly use Battlefield Select Tours.  Your organisation, hands on approach, willing attitude supported by the efforts of your assistant Peter and driver Mick did much to enhance the camaraderie that materialised during the trip.
Thank you Battlefield Select Tours.
Yours aye,
Lt Col (Retd) R J Towns MBE
Secretary Queen’s Own Highlanders Regimental Association
& President RBLS Nairn Branch.

Dear Battlefield Select Tours,

Just Getting back into the routine of home life again following my return from your excellent Normandy Trip.

Lots of amazing memories despite the relatively short excursion. This was due partly to the quality of the guides you found us. The enjoyment of the trip was otherwise down to you organising everything so well.

I thought I would drop you a note expressing my personal thanks for all you did for us and to offer my congratulations on the under rated success of the trip!

Sincere Thanks, Glen, Westhill, Inverness

Dear John,

Just a short note to say how much I enjoyed the trip - it was something I wanted to do for a long time.

I think we all appreciated the effort and organisation which you had put into making it a success and I was particularly impressed by your choice of guide.

Let me know about next year!

Regards, Jim, Inverness

Dear Mr Marr Just a wee note to thank you for a wonderful trip to Normandy which Eleaner, Karen and I enjoyed very much. It was nice for Eleaner to visit her brother's grave after nearly 45 years.

You did a first class job of organising everything from the bus, the ferry and accommodation, every part of the trip went well and turned out not only to be an informative battlefield tour but also a very good holiday.

Once again thanks from all three of us.

Yours Eric, Forres, Moray

Dear John  Just a wee note to say thank you for a fantastic weekend. I think we all appreciated the work, effort and worry that went into the organisation but I think you can look upon it as a great success. I certainly enjoyed the food (and wine) and the hotel was first class, at least our room was. The various trips were well guided and enough information for me to take in.

Once again thank you for everything and if you consider another one (especially WW2 trenches) count me in, it was a pleasure meeting you and the rest of the party, I know i speak for my brother John as well.

Many Thanks, Doug
