D-Day, The Normandy landings
On Tuesday 6th June, 1944, the Allies invaded the beaches of Normandy. So began the liberation of German-occupied Europe, dubbed Operation Overlord.
D-Day was the largest naval, air and land operation in history, and proved a decisive victory for Allied forces. Pulling together the resources of - not merely America, France, Britain and Canada - but numerous other nations as well, the operation proved instrumental in securing the defeat of the German army and the end of the war.
