Detailed Itinerary. (Note: All timings are local)

 

Day 1.

Friday.

Pick up & depart U.K. Hull to Rotterdam.

 

Day 2.

Saturday. 1st (British) Airborne Division area.

10.30 – 11.00. Arrive Wolfheze railway station.

11.00 – 11.15. Drive round to the area of Drop Zone ‘X’. Drop off at marker stone and point out the dropping area for the 1st Parachute Brigade and attachments.

11.30 – 12.00. Refreshment break at the Airborne Cafe at southern end of D.Z.

12.00 – 12.20. Visit to the Heelsum Airborne Memorial.

12.20 – 13.00. Drive along ‘LION’ route, taken by 2nd Para Bn in 1944, into Arnhem.

13.00 – 14.30. Drop off in town for lunch.

14.30 – 15.30. Tour of the Arnhem Bridge area.

15.30 – 16.30. Tour of the St Elizabeth’s Hospital area.

16.30 – 17.00. Drive to the hotel and check in.

 

Day 3.

Sunday. Guards Armoured and 101st (Screaming Eagles) Airborne Division’s area.

09.00. Depart the hotel for the Dutch/Belgian border.

10.30 – 11.00. Arrive at Joe’s Bridge near Lommel.

11.00 – 11.20. Visit to the monument on the N.E. side of the bridge and description of the start of ‘Operation Garden’.

11.20 – 11.30. Drive along the start of ‘Hells Highway’ to Valkenswaard War Cemetery.

11.30 – 11.50. Visit to Valkenswaard War Cemetery. First of the Guards Armoured Division casualties.

11.50 – 12.15. Drive into the centre of Valkenswaard. After a description of the overnight halt (17/18 Sep 1944) by the Guards Div, take a lunch break.

13.45 – 14.15. Drive to Son.

14.15 – 14.45. Visit to the Son Bridge area, scene of the attempt by ‘Easy Company’ (Band Of Brothers) to capture the first of the all important bridges.

14.45 – 14.40. Drive round to the Wings of Liberation Museum. [Note 1]

14.30 – 16.00. Visit to the museum, which also has an extensive restaurant and refreshment facilities.

16.00 – 17.30. Return drive to hotel via parts of Hells Highway.

 

Day 4.

Monday. Guards Armoured and 82nd (All American) Airborne Division’s area.

09.00. Depart the hotel for the area of Grave.

10.00 – 10.30. Visit the site of Grave Bridge and the successful capture by the American 82nd Airborne Division.

10.30 – 11.00. Drive towards Nijmegen, via Hells Highway to Jonkersbos.

11.00 – 11.30. Visit the War Cemetery Jonkersbos.

11.30 – 12.00. Drive into Nijmegen and park up.

12.00 – 14.30. Walk to the site of the Valkhof fort and area overlooking Nijmegen Bridge and relate the battle by the combined efforts of both the 82nd Airborne and Guards Armoured Div’s, then have a lunch break.

14.30 – 15.00. Drive to Groesbeek.

15.00 – 16.30. Visit to the Liberation Museum at Groesbeek, which has a small cafe & refreshment facilities. [Note 2]

16.30 – 17.30. Return to hotel via a drive over Nijmegen Bridge.

 

Day 5.

Tuesday. 1st (British) Airborne Division and 1st Polish Parachute Brigade’s area.

09.00. Depart the hotel and drive out towards Ede.

09.30 – 10.00. Visit to Drop Zone ‘’Y’. Scene of the opposed drop by the 4th Parachute Brigade on the 18th September 1944.

10.00 – 10.15. Drive round towards Wolfheze.

10.15- 10.30. Visit the glider memorial at the edge of Landing Zone ‘S’ and describe the glider landings.

10.30 – 11.00. Drive down through Wolfheze towards Oosterbeek & the War Cemetery.

11.00 – 12.00. Visit the War Cemetery at Oosterbeek. 3 x VC awards.

12.00 – 14.30. Drive round to the Hartenstein Airborne Museum area and park up. Visit to the museum & lunch break. [Note 3]

14.30 – 14.45. Drive to Westerbouwing.

14.45 – 15.15. Visit the Westerbouwing Heights that overlook the Lower Rhine to Driel.

15.15 – 16.00. Drive to the Church at Lower Oosterbeek.

16.00 – 16.30. Visit to the area of ‘Lonsdale Force’ and the famous church.

16.30 – 17.00. Depart for Rotterdam.

 

Day 6.

Wednesday.

Drive from Hull to Drop off points.
